A Personal Journey of Healing Through the Blood Type Diet

The first time I met fellow wellness coach Ashley Norwood,  she pulled a stick of butter out of her purse at a Wellcoach luncheon. Overwhelmed by curiosity, I asked why.  Turns out that Ashley had ended years of devastating digestive pain and tamed the symptoms of Celiac disease by following a diet called “Eat Right for Your Type.”  With Type O blood and a Hunter genotype, she told me that while she is highly reactive to soy, gluten and dairy, she could eat butter.  Worried that an Asian restaurant might not have butter available, she brought her own – and then she proceeded to cut several thick slices atop her steaming, sauce-free meal.

Topline, she admits that the Blood Type diet was difficult at first, but she found it worthwhile since it provided relief from years of discomfort and eliminated Emergency Room visits related to her digestive conditions.  Since I’m always on the lookout to feel terrific, manage gastrointestinal issues and to forestall the negative effects of aging, I pulled my copy of  “Eat Right 4 Your Type  ” off the shelf and blew the dust off its spine. Ten years ago, I shelved it when I found the dietary restrictions too rigorous  for my lifestyle. However, Ashley’s story got my attention. Could blood type or genotype be the key to better living?  Does the biochemical uniqueness of individuals require us to tailor our diets to match our blood type or our genotype to be truly healthy?   

According to naturopath Peter J. D’Adamo, N.D., author of the books, “Eat Right 4 Your Type” and more recently, “Change your Genetic Destiny” (formerly called the “GenoType Diet”) , there had to be a reason why there were so many paradoxes in dietary studies and disease survival. For example, why do some people lose weight and others do not on the same diet and why do some people keep their vitality as they age, while others do not?  Hmm, I’m not a scientist, but I have puzzled over these kinds of questions.

 D’Adamo’s research led him to conclude that blood type is the key that unlocks the door to the mysteries of health, disease, longevity, physical vitality, and emotional strength.  Many critics in the scientific community  believe that there is not enough research to support D’Adamo’s claims.  D’Adamo disputes this on his website  and in other public forums.  I don’t know who is right, but I do know there seem to be people who have benefitted from following the blood type approach.  D’Adamo’s studies show that approximately 75%  of 6617 individuals  who self-reported results after following the Blood Type Diet for a period of one month or more, had a significant improvement in a variety of health conditions including weight loss, digestive function, stress resistance, overall energy and mental clarity. Clearly, Ashley Norwood believes she fits into this category.

I don’t know the answer to the questions I’ve proposed, and I’m not promising any miracle cures, but if you have been suffering from digestive issues and have already seen the doctor without getting relief, or if you are game to try a new approach to managing your health, it may be worth a look.

    Thank you! Wonderful interview with Ashley Norwood. I posted it everywhere. My whole family has been living this way for quite sometime.. 20 plus years. I want the whole world to know so they can make an educated decision on how they live you have given people hope.

    I am convinced that anyone with "mysterious" health issues make a serious effort to solve it by following one of Dr. D'Adamo's diets. The correct diet allows the body to heal very deeply.

    Great interview. The diet healed my digestive issues too. You will know it's me at a restaurant when you see me pull out my own salad dressing.
